Angular spot, caused by Phaeoisariopsis griseola, causes a high reduction in the yield of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), a key crop for food security in Mexico. During a sampling in Cárdenas, Tabasco, two critical problems were identified: (1) incidence of fungal diseases in crops and (2) farmers' lack of knowledge about specific pathologies, attributing losses to climatic factors and depending exclusively on the commercial fungicide. As a solution, the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco (UJAT) initiated an interdisciplinary project focused on synthesizing pyrazine-derived antifungal compounds using green chemistry (on-water), and implementing outreach strategies. Samples of leaves and pods with lesions were collected for subsequent isolation of the fungus. At the same time, we talked with farmers to explain symptoms, disease cycles and integrated management practices, and succeeded in informing producers.
